Education has the power to transform lives, but for many refugee students, reaching higher education requires more than determination alone. For Jean Marie, the DAFI Scholarship provided the support he needed to complete his pharmacy studies and begin a career dedicated to improving community health. Today, he serves patients as a pharmacist while pursuing an even bigger vision to advance public health and pharmaceutical research.

There is no life without water: How Caritas helps secure access to it

This summer, the Czech Republic has already experienced several temperature records. We cope with the hottest days by staying indoors or finding shade wherever we can. Gardeners irrigate their crops with well water, while farmers cool their livestock with measures such as fans. During these periods, many of us impatiently wait for rain and make sure to stay hydrated. But can you imagine coping with extreme heat without access to water? Today, more than 2 billion people worldwide lack access to a safe source of drinking water. In some places, prolonged droughts and the impacts of climate change are the main causes. Elsewhere, armed conflicts further worsen the situation by destroying infrastructure and disrupting water supplies. We bring you an overview of the countries where Caritas Czech Republic is helping – from providing access to safe drinking water to supporting agriculture during droughts.

Czech agricultural technologies are heading to Zambia

Why connect Czech agricultural innovations with the needs of farmers in Zambia? Martin Jurkovič, the secretary general of the Czech Agricultural and Forestry Machinery Association (AZET), addressed this question in an interview with Caritas Czech Republic. In cooperation with Czech Development Agency, we aim to bring Czech technologies and know-how to Zambia in order to support more efficient and climate-resilient agriculture. Domestic companies will provide their innovations, while their collaboration and the transfer of solutions into practice are coordinated by AZET.

Climate change affects everyone: In Zambia, we are preparing young farmers as well as experienced growers

Samuel is in his early twenties and has been farming for only a short time. By contrast, Clerkson has worked in the industry since the 1990s. However, both of their livelihoods are threatened by climate change. Droughts are destroying harvests, yet agriculture is a common source of income in Zambia. That is why Caritas Czech Republic is training local farmers in modern techniques to help them better manage the impacts of climate change.
