How Caritas Czech Republic supports farmers in the Mayukwayukwa refugee settlement in Zambia

Agriculture drives the economy in Zambia and is the main source of income for most of the population, including refugees.  Caritas Czech Republic has contributed to the agriculture sector over the years by supporting farmers in different parts of the country with agriculture knowledge, farming inputs and start-up capital.

In the first week of October, representatives of Caritas Czech Republic' international branches gathered in Prague. Together with colleagues from the headquarters they discussed the successes of Caritas' aid in the world and shared their experiences. I now have a thriving popcorn and fritter business says Fostinah from Zambia

Mukeya Fostinah Ntenda is a member of the Twikatane Savings Group in the Nchelenge district of Zambia. She is 39 years old and married with six children. She was among the first people to join the group. Thanks to Caritas Czech Republic in Zambia and the Financial Sector Deepening (FSDZ) for introducing the savings group initiative, she now boasts of a thriving popcorn business.

Craft puts people of poor regions on their feet and rebuilds post-war areas

For people in disadvantaged regions, mastering a craft is a path to financial self-sufficiency. In places dealing with the impacts of war, it is a significant contributor to their reconstruction. For example, a welding workshop in Iraq, a restaurant in a refugee settlement in Zambia or a traditional jewellery shop in Georgia have all been created thanks to our help.

Namenda now has her own restaurant in the Mayukwayukwa Refugee Settlement

Life in a refugee settlement, far from big cities and job opportunities, makes it difficult to earn a living. Thanks to Caritas Czech Republic and UNHCR, refugees and people from host communities can open their own small businesses in the settlement. Like Namenda Simbuwa, who opened her own restaurant where she who cooks delicious meals that people love to eat.
